Iran FM discusses rising regional tensions with Saudi FM, Pakistani army chief
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate telephone conversations with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir as Tehran pressed ahead with intensive regional consultations to contain insecurity and restore stability in West Asia.
In his call with Prince Faisal on Thursday, Araghchi reviewed the latest regional developments. Both sides pointed to the escalation of tensions and the rise in insecurity across the region and underlined the need to keep cooperation and diplomatic efforts going in order to prevent the spread of the crisis and return stability and security to the neighborhood.
Later on Thursday night, Araghchi spoke with Pakistan’s Army Chief Munir. The two officials examined the latest developments and exchanged views on the intensification of tensions, growing insecurity, and the consequences for regional peace and stability. They also stressed the need for vigilance and coordination among regional countries and the use of shared capacities to help establish lasting peace and security.
Pakistan has played a mediating role in efforts to halt the US-Israeli-imposed war on Iran, including through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, while Iran and Saudi Arabia have maintained regular high-level contact since the restoration of diplomatic ties.
On Wednesday, Araghchi received Iran’s ambassador to Islamabad, Reza Amiri-Moghaddam, and commended Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating diplomacy. He emphasized the need for continued consultations between the two neighboring Muslim nations to secure mutual interests and contribute to regional security.
The same day, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry publicly reaffirmed that Iran, as a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has a legitimate right to develop and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, a position Tehran has consistently described as a matter of principle rather than concession.
Thursday’s calls follow a pattern of frequent coordination. Araghchi and Prince Faisal spoke as recently as Saturday on bilateral issues, regional developments and diplomatic efforts to restore stability, including the insecurity imposed on the Strait of Hormuz by Washington’s aggressive actions.
Araghchi and Munir have likewise stayed in close contact throughout the year, including during Munir’s visits to Tehran and successive phone consultations on political solutions to the crisis.
Iranian officials have repeatedly argued that durable security in West Asia cannot be imposed from outside and that regional countries themselves must take responsibility for preventing the expansion of tensions.
