Ansarullah military gains
Yemen’s Ansarullah forces have liberated the southwestern coast of Yemen, as well as islands off the coast of al-Khokha in the Red Sea.The advances were made after days of heavy fighting in Mokha. Ansarullah forces have also taken full control of the strategic al-Omari military base overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Meanwhile, Ansarullah's naval forces have established full control over Zuqar Island, as well as the nearby Greater and Lesser Hanish islands. Meanwhile, all Yemenis held in jails run by Saudi-backed forces along the western coast have also been freed. Three brigades of Saudi-backed forces have reportedly surrendered to the Yemeni armed forces on several fronts, including Hays, Mokha, al-Khokha, Taiz and al-Jawf. Yemen's Supreme Political Council announced the end of clashes along the country’s western coast after Saudi-backed forces were defeated and pushed back.
Oil prices rising again
Oil prices continue to surge, hovering above 100 dollars as tensions between the US and Iran intensify. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose above 105 dollars per barrel on Thursday. The surge came after Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted two US ships, eight oil tankers and ten other vessels in the Hormuz Strait and the Persian Gulf region. Tehran has also expanded a prohibited zone to parts of the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, warning vessels entering without coordination will face action. The latest escalation comes after US forces attacked five Iranian oil tankers and Iran initiated subsequent strikes on US military facilities in the region in an act of self-defense.
Trump midterm incentive
The US President has made a dubious pledge to pay every US adult 5,000 dollars if Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. Donald Trump made the promise during a marathon speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas where he labeled Democrats as radical and defended his controversial war on Iran. The promise that would most likely cost more than 1 trillion dollars would further exacerbate the country’s nearly 1.8 trillion-dollar annual budget deficit and inflation concerns. Republicans are hoping that holding a midterm convention, the first in the party’s history, will boost their chances at a time when they’re widely expected to lose control of the House. But Trump’s low approval rating, hovering around 38-percent, has led many Republican candidates in tight races to skip the event entirely, highlighting internal divisions within the party.
