Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has appreciated Iran’s firm support for the people and government of the Arab country, saying Tehran has been a significant partner in Iraq’s counter-terrorism efforts.
Zaidi made these remarks during a Wednesday meeting with visiting Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, according to a statement released by his office.
During the meeting, Zaidi underscored the deep bonds and connections between Iraq and Iran and called for increased joint efforts to strengthen bilateral ties that would serve the interests of the two neighboring countries, the statement added.
Qalibaf, in turn, thanked the Iraqi government for its successful organization of the recent Arbaeen pilgrimage, during which millions of Iranians visited the holy shrines of Shia imams in the Arab country.
He also reiterated that Tehran is eager to expand its relations with Iraq across all areas of mutual interest.

Qalibaf arrived in the Iraqi capital Baghdad earlier on Wednesday to begin a two-day visit to the Arab country, where he and his high-ranking parliamentary delegation will hold meetings with senior political, security, and economic officials of Iraq.
Later in the day, the Iranian Parliament speaker met with his Iraqi counterpart, Haibat al-Halbousi.
A readout of the meeting provided by the Iranian Parliament indicated that Qalibaf had accused the United States of being the main culprit behind the current crises and problems in the West Asia region.
His remarks come amid the ongoing confrontation between Iran and the United States, which has also affected regional countries.
Qalibaf said the recurrent damage inflicted on the region over the past decades has been the result of British colonial policies in the past, which led to the creation of the Israeli regime in the region.
He also called for further deepening of economic relations between Iran and Iraq, saying those relations do not yet match the deep cultural and political ties between the two neighbors.
Halbousi, for his part, said Iraq honors Iran’s historic and legendary resistance against the US and the Israeli regime, and that the Iraqi people, government, and political figures are unanimously opposed to Israeli aggressions against Iran.
The Iraqi parliament speaker also highlighted that US forces will soon withdraw from Iraqi territory and called on Iran to ease restrictions on the passage of Iraqi oil through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.
