Sunday's rally and the ensuing march in Paris united activists, trade unions, community groups and officials in solidarity against all forms of racism.

The past few years in France, there has been a lot of racism, and we are too here to work against it, and that's why we are here, and I think that's why it's important, because it's unfair, it's basic human right, you know.

Campaigners say the protest is to promote equal rights and social cohesion, and to send a clear message that discrimination has no place in society.

With the presidential and parliamentary elections in France just ten months away, opinion polls indicate that the far-right anti-immigrant party, the National Rally, is leading.

The far right taking power in France; the election is next year, so now is the time to get involved to make our voices as big as possible.

There is [sic] a lot of people, even if it is very hot.

Some groups supporting the march have also linked their anti-racism, anti-fascist campaign to international struggles against discrimination.

Supporters of Palestinian rights and statehood who were well represented at the rally condemned Israel's system of apartheid and remorseless oppression of Palestinians.

We cannot close our eyes to what's happening in Palestine, and so no matter what's the occasion, yes, I think it's okay, it's legitimate if they are here, and if here we are to support them.

I feel like, yeah, they have to be here because we always have to be reminded of what's happening there.

Ceasefire is not respected by Israel, and because there is a real injustice where France doesn't act enough for Palestine, it doesn't want to end support for the association pact between Israel and the European Union, for example, and that's something we want to end because of the ongoing genocide.

Gabriel Rupert, Protester

Organizers hope the large turnout demonstrates public support for equality and democratic values, while also highlighting the Palestinian cause, which they say is connected to the broader fight against injustice.
