Iran’s top security official says US must change its behavior
Iran’s top security official says Tehran remains distrustful of the United States and urges Washington to change its behavior.
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Mohsen Rezaei made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Tehran on Monday.
Rezaei said Iran remains distrustful of the United States. Washington, he added, must take practical steps to implement the provisions of the Pakistan-brokered Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Tehran and Washington in June.
He also stressed that Iran maintains tight security control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
For his part, Munir mentioned Pakistan’s extensive efforts toward the signing of the Islamabad MoU.
The Pakistani army chief reiterated the brotherly and friendly ties between Iran and Pakistan and said Islamabad has gone to great lengths to enhance security along the border between the two neighboring countries.
Tehran and Washington signed the 14-point Islamabad MoU on June 17. It called for an end to hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and further negotiations toward a final agreement.
However, Washington violated all provisions of the understanding, prompting Iran to deliver a firm response.
Tehran recently announced the suspension of its own obligations under the framework, asserting that Washington shattered the accord through its own aggressive actions and bad faith.
Munir’s shuttle diplomacy highlights Pakistan’s critical role as a mediator attempting to salvage the framework and prevent further escalation.
Earlier on Monday, the Pakistani army chief held separate meetings with Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
