Iran has rejected the IAEA resolution as politicized and provocative

Iran, Russia, and China in a joint statement have slammed as 'politicized and destabilizing' an anti-Iran resolution passed by the IAEA Board of Governors.

The resolution stipulates that Iran should provide information on its enriched uranium stockpile and grant the UN nuclear agency access to its nuclear sites.

The resolution also disregards the fact that after more than two decades of inspection in Iran, there is no report by the agency about the diversion of even one gram of nuclear material.

These realities indicate how unnecessary, politicized, and provocative this resolution is.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to act in accordance with its international obligations; however, it will not hesitate to defend its people, protect its inherent right, safeguard its sovereignty and security, and preserve its national interests by all means.

Reza Najafi, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vienna

The resolution was submitted by the US, Britain, France, and Germany.

Russia, China and Niger voted against the resolution, while 10 of the 35 member states on the IAEA board abstained.

This resolution, once again, lays bare the true nature of the IAEA board. In recent months, the world has witnessed attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran, Ukraine and the UAE.

In the case of Iran, Director General Grossi refused to condemn the aggressors, namely the US and Israel.

60 years ago, the IAEA was formed to prevent attacks on nuclear facilities, but since then it has become the new normal.

Russia, China, and Iran issued a strongly worded condemnation of the resolution in a joint statement at the start of the session.

I called this draft resolution a farce, just a farce, absolutely untimely.

The Americans had first to declare, to provide guarantees that there will be no new military strikes, and only then they can ask for the adoption of such a resolution.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vienna

The IAEA, as many other international organizations, is increasingly paralyzed by a split between Western states and the bloc led by Iran, China, Russia, and their allies in the global south.

The Russian and Chinese stand always balanced, and they want that all these issues be solved through negotiation, while the other side, they are more aggressive, they want things, if not solved by negotiation, to be solved by military [sic].

The resolution sets out a timeframe of implementation until the next regular board meeting, which will commence on September 7th; it requests that Director General Grossi report to the board at this meeting.
