Protesters demand UK break from US foreign policy

Protesters in Caracas and London call for Maduro's release.

Opposite the gates of 10 Downing Street, anti-war campaigners gathered in reaction to the US aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife,

It's completely outrageous to think that one country can invade another country with 150 aircraft and just go in and take out the sitting head of state.

It's completely outrageous. And it's not just about Venezuela.

This is a warning for other countries.

Kevin Courtney, Cuba Solidarity Campaign

Donald Trump is showing what US imperialism is. He's showing it nakedly.

He admits it, doesn't he? It’s a grab for oil.

He uses only the flimsiest tissue of lies about drugs, but he's absolutely clear it's about oil.

And I think it has to be absolutely clear that this attack doesn't end with Venezuela.

It's terrible for Venezuela, but it's terrible for Cuba.

It's terrible for Colombia.

It's terrible for Greenland.

A lot of that anger is also directed at the British government for remaining silent and for following Washington's lead in its historical animosity towards Venezuela's anti-imperialist Bolivarian government.

The British role in Venezuela goes far beyond rhetoric, from seizing national assets to the tune of billions of dollars, to supporting Washington's regime change strategy.

The UK, the demonstrators say, is, once again, playing junior partner in helping enforce a modern day siege by a rogue regime in Washington on a sovereign nation.

British meddling in Venezuela doesn't stop there; London also embraced the US recognized coup leader, Juan Guaido, as interim president of Venezuela from January 2019 to December 2022.

The prime minister of the UK has the moral, political and constitutional responsibility to uphold international law to which the United Kingdom is signatory. The United Nations Charter, particularly articles one and two, has been flagrantly and disgustedly violated by the United States.

He cannot claim in the morning to say that he upholds international law, and in the afternoon to say that he agrees with what Trump is doing.

Dr Francisco Dominguez, Venezuela Solidarity Campaign

Despite his election promises of ending forever wars, the US president is embroiled in stoking new imperialist conflicts around the world.

The protestors here demand that the British government break from US foreign policy and not be a vassal state of Washington.
