US Iraq withdrawal
Celebrations have erupted across Iraq as the nation marks the final withdrawal of the US-led coalition forces from the country. Iraqi security forces held military parades in Najaf, Baghdad, and Kirkuk to mark the end of the US-led occupation. Members of the Popular Mobilization Forces also rallied in the capital Baghdad, driving convoy formations through Najaf in celebrations. The United States and its coalition partners have formally concluded their presence under a bilateral agreement signed in 2024 under former US president Joe Biden. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has described the pullout as the beginning of a new phase defined by Iraq’s sovereignty and stronger state institutions. More than 4500 US troops were killed in Iraq over more than two decades of war and occupation. The US invaded Iraq in 2003 to overthrow Saddam Hussein’s regime, which the US accused of possessing weapons of mass destruction.
'Iran reviewing US response'
Iran says it is reviewing a US response to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s government spokesperson says Washington’s counter-proposal was delivered directly to President Masoud Pezeshkian by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This follows Araghchi’s high-level meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he submitted Tehran’s conditions to mediators on reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump said he rejected the initiative. Tehran’s seven point proposal calls on Washington to lift its naval blockade, ease economic sanctions, and end military operations against Iran.
