Saudi Arabia requested intelligence assistance from Israel to confront Yemen, says report
Israel and Saudi Arabia have reportedly held talks mediated by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) to help Riyadh defend itself against retaliatory drone and missile strikes carried out by the Yemeni armed forces through intelligence assistance.
English-language Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post, citing sources in the region, reported that representatives from Riyadh and Tel Aviv regimes have engaged in discussions facilitated by CENTCOM to assist the Saudis in ensuring their own security.
The sources said Saudi Arabia’s request for assistance was most likely focused on intelligence support to paint a broader picture of the Yemenis’ military deployment in the region and to identify potential plans for future operations.
According to American news channel Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia also asked Britain for help in repelling Yemeni military forces from the Bab al-Mandab Strait and for help in defending against attacks on its oil infrastructure.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reportedly agreed to send British military advisers to assist Saudi Arabia, but has not yet committed to sending any additional aid.
This comes as the Yemeni military has intensified its retaliatory attacks against Saudi Arabia over the past week, including a large-scale and qualitative operation against King Khalid Air Base near the Saudi city of Khamis Mushait.
According to the spokesperson for the Yemeni army, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, dozens of domestically manufactured Yemeni ballistic missiles and combat drones hit military installations and infrastructure, aircraft hangars, radar systems, runways, arms depots, and other designated targets inside the airbase on Monday.
The Yemeni armed forces have lately declared their control over Perim Island, also known as Mayyun Island in Arabic, thereby establishing complete dominance over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, an essential maritime route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
The assumption of control over Perim Island, which lies at the heart of the Bab al-Mandab Strait and serves as a vital observation site, has placed the entire waterway under the authority of forces operating from Sana’a.
Recent events unfold amidst escalating tensions along Yemen’s western coastline, where Yemeni forces and Saudi-backed mercenaries have engaged in confrontations over crucial coastal areas and strategic locations.
The latest advances have altered the power dynamics on the western front, leading Saudi Arabia to carry out airstrikes targeting Yemeni positions and infrastructure.
