Hunger strike in solidarity with Sumud activists detained in Libya

Ship at sea

Dozens of activists from 13 countries, including Spain, have launched a global hunger strike demanding the immediate release of members of The Global Sumud North African Land Convoy detained in eastern Libya on their way to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Organizers say the detainees have now spent 10 days without food or water in what they describe as inhumane conditions inside secret detention facilities.

Once again, in Seville, we demand the release of 10 kidnapped Sumud activists heading to Gaza with humanitarian aid and detained by authorities in Eastern Libya.

Their detention has been extended by 30 days.

We have little information on their condition, and call on Spanish authorities and the EU to act and bring them home.

Luis Reina, Global Sumud Flotila, Seville

We are deeply concerned, as they have been detained for over two weeks in critical [sic] conditions.

We condemn the absolute silence and inaction of our governments and demand their immediate release.

The mobilization has expanded across five continents, with solidarity actions reported in countries including Canada, the United States, Italy, South Africa and Spain.

Demonstrations have also been called outside Libyan embassies and foreign ministries demanding urgent diplomatic intervention.

Today we warn that the activists detained in Libya are at serious risk after 10 days on a hunger and thirst strike.

They were part of a humanitarian convoy supporting the Palestinian people in Gaza, where a genocide is taking place under the Israeli Zionist regime.

Organizers accuse Eastern Libyan authorities, led by Khalifa Haftar, of a wider crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism.

Spanish activist Daniel Lobato from The Land Convoy in Libya also highlights the influence of external actors shaping power in the region amid political instability.

Speaking from The Ground Convoy to Gaza, we aim to break the siege and reach Gaza via North Africa and Egypt.

We faced obstruction from Israel's proxy warlord, Khalifa Haftar, in eastern Libya, backed by Egypt's Al Sisi regime.

I took part in negotiations in Sirte for safe passage under international law, but the convoy was blocked, and members were detained in Benghazi in harsh conditions.

We demand their immediate release and safe passage to Gaza.

From Seville, this protest announces the detention of Sumud Flotilla activists in Libya, which organizations describe as a criminalization of solidarity activism with Palestine.

The detainees have been on a hunger and thirst strike for 10 days in inhumane conditions.

People have also condemned the inaction of Western governments in response to what they describe as a kidnapping of their nationals.
