War powers bill to rein in Trump’s war on Iran tabled in Congress

Finally reflecting the overwhelming public opinion against the war on Iran, the House of Representatives voted in favor of a war powers resolution that would constrain the belligerence of President Donald Trump.

This measure is the first attempt by the legislative branch to wrest back its constitutional power as the sole body permitted to declare war, something that presidents of both parties have been ignoring for decades.

It really is the most nonsensical thing that I can imagine, for someone to decide we can just have a war go on for as long as we want it to go on, and in the end we're going to keep sacrificing more American lives, more Iranian lives, .... it does not make sense for it to continue.

An angry Trump called the four Republicans who broke ranks and the Democrats who supported the measure unpatriotic.

Trump reportedly said in private that he would consider ending the ceasefire with Iran if any American troops are killed. That has many saying that he's looking for any pretext to end a cease fire, which he has repeatedly violated, and for which he clearly has a nonstandard definition.

It's a different part of the world. I'd say in that part of the world, ceasefires when you're shooting in a more moderate manner. A ceasefire there is much different than a ceasefire in other parts of the world.

The war powers measure will likely be defeated by the Republican-controlled Senate in a vote expected next week, but many are hoping Congress listens to public opinion.

I would like to see for them to have a conscience and decide that this is all senseless.

I would like also for ... people to wake up and see that these wars, absolutely, they are destructive to everyone involved, and it is a complete, absolute waste of our resources, of our time.

We can do better, and we should do better. And so they need to stand up and decide that this war cannot continue.

Perhaps the top political poll from United States academia just showed the public's overwhelming rejection of Washington's war.

Just 18% say the United States has achieved its goals in the war with Iran, 61% say there was insufficient reason to go to war, and a whopping 72% say the war was not worth it.
