Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has praised the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of Iranian Red Crescent workers and volunteers during the recent US-Israeli aggression.

“From targeted ambulances to relief workers who pulled survivors from the rubble, Iran’s Red Crescent is not just a humanitarian organization — it is a living narrative of unparalleled self-sacrifice and bravery,” Baghaei wrote in a social media post on Friday.

His remarks were made on the occasion of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, observed annually on May 8 to mark the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

“The day provides us an opportunity to pay tribute to those who, under heavy fire from bombs and missiles, risk their lives to help fellow human beings and rescue our compatriots,” he said.

Baghaei saluted the volunteers and relief workers, describing them as true symbols of humanity and altruism.

“Salutations to all relief workers, volunteers, and their patient families — those who, in the most difficult moments, give real meaning to humanity and selflessness,” he said.

During the two wars imposed by the United States and the Israeli regime over the past year, at least 9 members of Iran’s Red Crescent Society and an entire 8-member family of Red Crescent volunteers were martyred.

Statistics show that the aggressors directly attacked 350 medical centers, 993 schools, universities and educational institutions, 56 Red Crescent centers, 49 rescue and relief vehicles and ambulances, and 3 Red Crescent and emergency relief helicopters.

In the recent US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran, Red Crescent teams carried out 6,003 rescue and relief operations, successfully rescuing 7,215 people alive from under the rubble and transferring 7,000 others to medical centers.

A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that took effect on April 8 — and was later extended unilaterally by Washington — temporarily halted the US-Israeli aggression.

However, tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor for global energy trade.

Iran closed the Strait to its enemies and their allies following the unprovoked US-Israeli aggression. Iranian authorities also imposed much stricter controls last month after US President Donald Trump announced a blockade targeting Iranian vessels and ports.

Despite the blockade, shipping activity linked to Iranian crude oil continues.
