Lavrov demands clarity on US role in Ukraine settlement, slams contradictory Western statements

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska on August 15, 2025.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has demanded full clarification regarding the United States’ true intentions and role in mediating the Ukraine conflict, exposing apparent contradictions in Washington’s position.

Speaking on Friday, Lavrov called for transparency on “the entire situation” and the specific steps the US intends to take as a claimed mediator in the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

In a detailed written response to media questions about the outcome of last year’s summit in Anchorage, Alaska, between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Lavrov provided a clear account of events.

Prior to the Alaska summit, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow and presented specific peace proposals on behalf of President Trump to President Putin.

Putin pledged to give a formal response during the August meeting in Alaska. Lavrov stated that the two sides did reach an agreement in Anchorage.

“US proposals were discussed and accepted by the Russian side in Alaska,” he confirmed.

The top Russian diplomat stressed: “If one party, in this case the United States, puts forward its proposals for a settlement and the other party expresses concurrence with these proposals, then to claim that no agreement was reached appears, to put it mildly, somewhat inelegant.”

Lavrov’s remarks came in direct response to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who claimed on Thursday that the Alaska summit produced “no agreement” and failed to end the war.

“There was a proposal in Alaska, but there was no agreement. If there had been an agreement, we would have had an end of the war,” Rubio told reporters, while repeating Washington’s claim of readiness to play a “constructive role” in peace talks.

Lavrov pushed back firmly, asserting that Putin and Trump had in fact “agreed on how to end the fighting in Ukraine and begin resolving all remaining issues at the negotiating table.”

He described Rubio’s version of events as “a bit disingenuous.”

The Russian foreign minister questioned Rubio’s narrative directly: “When my counterpart Marco Rubio says that there were only proposals but no agreement in Alaska, I have to ask: what do we mean by an agreement?”

Lavrov reiterated the need to “clarify the entire situation” concerning Washington’s role as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.

Following the Alaska Summit, several European leaders rushed to Washington to hold talks with Trump on a new Ukraine peace framework.

Reports indicate that these European leaders expressed strong opposition to the understanding reportedly reached between Putin and Trump.

This episode highlights ongoing inconsistencies and possible bad-faith maneuvering by the Western camp in efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
