A powerful explosion rocked a heavily fortified district of Kabul on Monday, leaving several people dead and injured, according to a Taliban Interior Ministry spokesperson.
“An explosion occurred in a hotel on Gulfaroshi Street in Shahr-e-Naw, the fourth district of Kabul city, causing casualties,” Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said without detailing the cause.
“According to preliminary reports, a number of people have been killed and injured,” Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, stated.
One Afghan security guard was killed, and two Chinese nationals were injured in the blast, Chinese state media reported.
The wounded have been rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
Initial reports suggest that a hotel and an adjacent restaurant near the blast site were severely damaged.
The Taliban, which had waged a lengthy insurgency, regained control of Afghanistan in 2021 and vowed to restore security to the war-torn nation.
While attacks in Kabul and across Afghanistan have become less frequent since the Taliban’s return to power following the US withdrawal, the threat remains. The affiliates of the Daesh (ISIS) takfiri group continue to operate in the country, carrying out sporadic attacks.
Several neighboring countries have expressed ongoing concerns over the presence of Daesh-linked factions and armed criminal groups taking refuge within Afghanistan.
