Body of Iranian sailor martyred in Ukrainian strike in Caspian Sea returns home
The body of Iranian sailor Nima Moradi, martyred in a Ukrainian attack on the merchant vessel Anna in Russian waters last week, has been returned home along with eight surviving crew members.
During the past week, the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Astrakhan coordinated with Russian authorities to secure the necessary permits, complete legal procedures, oversee investigations and interviews with the crew, and issue temporary travel documents after their identification papers were destroyed or lost during the incident.
The Iranian Consul General in Astrakhan also maintained regular contact with the crew, meeting them several times and providing consular and humanitarian assistance throughout the process until they departed for Iran.
A Pouya Air flight departed Astrakhan for Rasht at 4:30 p.m. local time on Sunday and landed at Sardar Jangal International Airport at 5:45 p.m., where the crew and the body of the deceased sailor were received by the governor of Gilan province and other local officials.
Following the reception ceremony, the body of the sailor was transferred to his hometown of Bandar Anzali for funeral and burial ceremonies attended by his family, relatives, and provincial officials.
The Iranian Consulate General in Astrakhan extended its condolences to the family of the deceased sailor and thanked Iran’s ambassador to Moscow, the governor of Gilan, and Pouya Air for their cooperation in facilitating the swift return of the crew and the victim’s body to Iran.
The merchant ship Anna, which was carrying a cargo of iron from the Russian port of Astrakhan to Iran’s Bandar Anzali, came under a Ukrainian attack, killing one sailor and injuring several others.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a post on X on July 25 that Kiev had hit vessels he claimed were used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship, in the Caspian Sea.
Iran issued a strongly worded condemnation, saying it would respond to the attack. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the aggression “a clear violation of the United Nations Charter” carried out “at Israel’s instigation to drag Europe into war.”
Araghchi also said in separate telephone conversations with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Ukraine’s action “cannot go unanswered.”
