A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring many more, with the death toll expected to increase as rescue efforts continue.

The strong earthquake shook the capital, Kabul, the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, and the northern Samangan province.

Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, said at least 10 people died and 260 were injured in the incident.

As the number of casualties continues to rise, other sources reported that at least 20 people were dead and 320 people were injured.

Afghanistan’s ministry of defense announced that rescue and relief operations had begun in the worst-hit areas, where teams were already evacuating the injured and assisting the affected families.

In early September, a large earthquake killed 2,200 people in the country.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan, in the mountainous area close to the border with Pakistan. The quake had rocked Jalalabad, the capital city of Nangarhar Province, at around midnight local time.

In October 2023, an earthquake in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat killed at least 2,400 people.

Earthquakes are common in Afghanistan, particularly along the Hindu Kush mountain range, killing hundreds of people on average each year and causing substantial material damage to the country.

The mountain range is where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet.
