Israel escalates abduction of Palestinian women, girls under ‘social media incitement’ pretext: Rights group

A Palestinian human rights organization has warned that Israeli occupation forces have notably intensified their abduction campaign against Palestinian women and girls in recent weeks over accusations of “social media incitement.”

The Palestinian Center for Prisoners’ Advocacy, in a statement on Monday, described the measure as an apparent move aimed at suppressing voices that speak out against Israeli actions.

It added that over 600 women have been detained since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.

The center noted that 48 women currently remain in Israeli custody, with more than 40 detained on accusations of digital incitement. Among them, twelve are being held under administrative detention without trial.

The rights group reported that those targeted were mothers of resistance fighters, social activists, and university students. Israeli authorities have cited social media posts documenting their actions or featuring images of martyrs as justification for classifying such content as incitement.

The detentions took place during aggressive nighttime operations, marked by invasions of homes, property damage, the handcuffing and blindfolding of those detained, followed by their transport in humiliating conditions using military vehicles.

The report disclosed that women incarcerated in Damon Prison endure severe hardships, such as inadequate food, continuous monitoring through cameras, lack of medical care, demeaning security checks, and brutal attacks by special units, which include physical beatings, gas attacks, shackling, and the added humiliation of being filmed.

The center further reported abduction of several teenage girls on similar charges, naming Sally Sadaqa and Hanaa Hammad.

It even mentioned the case of Tahani Abu Samhan, who was abducted while she was pregnant and even gave birth during her detention. Additionally, it drew attention to the case of Fidaa Assaf, a cancer patient who has been deprived of adequate medical care.

The Palestinian Center for Prisoners' Advocacy emphasized that these violations signify a troubling intensification of attacks on women and girls, as part of larger efforts to eradicate the Palestinian population.

Such actions openly contravene international law established to safeguard women in conflict situations, it pointed out.

The center underlined the urgent need for the release of all female detainees and the cessation of detentions tied to personal views or online activities.

It called on international organizations to step up, assume their responsibilities, and ensure that Israel is held accountable for its ongoing violations against Palestinian women.
