Iran gains UNESCO approval for heritage and cognitive science initiatives

UNESCO has given its final approval to two major Iranian scientific and cultural initiatives.

UNESCO has given its final approval to two major Iranian scientific and cultural initiatives, marking a significant milestone in Iran’s role within global research cooperation and cultural heritage protection.

According to a report from the National Commission for UNESCO on Sunday, the organization endorsed the establishment of the first Hamzad University Network (UNITWIN) at the University of Isfahan, focusing on structural restoration and crisis risk management of architectural heritage.

It also approved the launch of a UNESCO Chair in Cognitive Sciences for Education, Innovation, and Human-Technology Interaction at the Institute for Higher Education and Cognitive Science Studies (ICSS).

The dual approvals place Iran at the forefront of regional and international collaboration in architectural heritage conservation and the expanding field of cognitive technologies.

The UNITWIN network, which is the first of its kind involving Iran, will be overseen by Professor Mehrdad Hejazi and developed in collaboration with Krakow University of Technology in Poland.

Involving universities and institutions across 11 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, the initiative aims to address the increasing risks to historical structures posed by earthquakes, floods, climate change, and other hazards.

UNESCO also approved the establishment of the cognitive sciences chair headed by Hafez Hajikarim Jabbari, designed to expand interdisciplinary research, train specialized experts, and support innovative technologies to improve mental health and human well-being.

The program will facilitate the connection between universities, clinical institutions, and the industrial sector to apply scientific research into practical solutions.
