Iran tops Asian Youth Karate Championships with 31-medal haul
Iran topped the medal table at the 24th Asian Youth Karate Championships in Amman, Jordan, with a haul of 11 gold, 12 silver and eight bronze medals to secure the continental team title.
Saudi Arabia and hosts Jordan followed Iran in the overall standings. Iran’s final-day medal haul came from its Under-21 women, who dominated the women’s events with four golds and a bronze.
Ghazal Fathi opened Iran’s gold-medal run in the under-50kg division. She overcame rivals from Jordan and India to reach the final, where she overwhelmed Saudi Arabia’s Joud Mayajan 11-1.
Fatemeh Jafarnajad followed suit in the under-55kg category, progressing past opponents from Saudi Arabia, India and Syria before defeating Jordan’s Balsam Al-Saeeda 4-1 in the title bout.
Zahra Reza-Zadeh then added another gold in the under-61kg division. After seeing off competitors from India and Taiwan, she produced a commanding 5-0 victory over Macau’s Hang Lopo in the final.
Mahla Sadegh completed Iran’s gold-medal sweep in the over-68kg category, defeating athletes from Jordan and Saudi Arabia before dispatching India’s Kalyani Vishwakarma 9-0 to take the title.
Boshra Imani rounded out Iran’s haul with bronze in the under-68kg division, beating Jordan’s Shadi Saeed 5-2 in the third-place bout.
In the men’s Under-21 division, Abolfazl Tamaddon-Zadeh secured silver in the under-55kg category. He advanced to the final with wins over representatives from Saudi Arabia, Palestine and Syria, but was beaten 5-2 by Tajikistan’s Makhshatali Muminov in the title bout.
Mehdi Choobak-Zan added a bronze in the under-67kg category, edging Chinese Taipei’s Su An-Hoang 4-3 in the third-place bout.
Vahab Shahmir narrowly missed the podium in the under-84kg division. He fell to Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al-Qahtani in the semifinal before suffering another defeat to his Malaysian opponent in the bronze-medal contest.
Taha Yousefi also came away without a medal in the over-84kg category, exiting after defeats to opponents from Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
In the under-60kg category, Abolfazl Hamdam-Joo won his opening bout but was eliminated in the second round, while Erfan Khosh-Aghideh’s campaign in the under-75kg division ended in the opening round with a loss to Saudi Arabia’s representative.
