Israel indefinitely closing only border between West Bank, Jordan

Authorities say Israel will indefinitely close the only border between the occupied West Bank and Jordan, amid mounting concerns that the shutdown will cut Palestinians off from their only direct link to the outside world.

The Palestinian Borders Authority said in a statement on Tuesday that Israel had informed Palestinian officials of “the closure of the Al-Karama crossing starting tomorrow, Wednesday (September 24) … until further notice, in both directions.”

The crossing, located in the Jordan Valley, is the sole international gateway for Palestinians from the West Bank that does not require passing through Israel.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate also confirmed the closure of the crossing, known on its side as the King Hussein Bridge, citing instructions from “the other side” to suspend all passenger and cargo traffic.

The crossing has long been a rare outlet for Palestinians seeking to travel abroad without passing through Israel. Now, its indefinite suspension risks further tightening restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank, who already face severe limits on movement under Israeli occupation.

Israel has occupied the territory since 1967, exercising full control over its borders, airspace, and much of its land. Palestinians have for decades lived in the occupied West Bank and al-Quds under conditions that, according to rights groups, amount to apartheid.

Rights groups say the regime has maintained this apartheid system by imposing sweeping restrictions on freedom of movement and residency, blocking family unification, and limiting access to basic services.

They also point to Israel’s widespread use of arbitrary detention as a method of subjugation, intimidation, and control aimed at oppressing and dominating the Palestinian population.
