Iran calls for full implementation of Yemen roadmap to end humanitarian suffering

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, stressing the need for renewed efforts to achieve a just resolution to the Yemeni crisis and prevent further instability in the region.

Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that the conflict in Yemen has no military solution, emphasizing that a return to dialogue and the full implementation of the agreed roadmap are the only viable means of ending the suffering of the Yemeni people and preserving regional peace and stability.

He also voiced concern over the continued blockade of Yemen and restrictions on the entry of essential goods, fuel, and basic services, describing the measures as a major driver of the country's humanitarian crisis and worsening living conditions.

Baghaei called for the complete lifting of the restrictions and the facilitation of humanitarian access to meet the basic needs of the Yemeni people.

The spokesperson further criticized the United States' interventionist and provocative policies in the region, saying they have further complicated the situation.

He stressed that regional security and stability should be achieved through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding among the countries of the region.

Baghaei reaffirmed that Iran supports any constructive initiative aimed at advancing dialogue and promoting a political settlement to the Yemen crisis based on the agreed roadmap, to restore lasting peace, security, and stability in the country.

In December 2023, Saudi Arabia and the ruling Ansarullah movement in Yemen committed to a UN-sponsored peace plan to end the years-long conflict. The process, however, unraveled as tensions spiked in the region following the launch of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

Tensions flared earlier this month when Saudi Arabia tried to prevent the return of an Iranian plane carrying a delegation of Yemeni officials to Tehran for the funeral of Iran’s martyred Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The plane was diverted after the Sana’a airport was bombed and landed safely in the city of Hudaydah.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched the blockade on Yemen as part of a full-scale war since March 2015, with military, political, and logistical support from the United States and other Western states.

The war has killed tens of thousands of Yemenis, while consistently falling short of its main objective of restoring power to Yemen’s former Riyadh-friendly regime.

The government had fled the country amid a power struggle, prompting Ansarullah, Yemen’s popular resistance movement, to start running state affairs.

Following a fragile UN-brokered ceasefire in 2022, the United States, Britain, and the Israeli regime waged many rounds of aggression against Yemen.

The attacks sought to cripple Sana’a’s capability to stage solidarity strikes against Israeli targets in response to Tel Aviv’s war of genocide on the Gaza Strip.
