UN’s Albanese slams Israeli settler attacks in West Bank, demands accountability for regime’s crimes
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has condemned the surge in Israeli settler violence across the occupied West Bank, urging the international community to protect Palestinian civilians and hold Israel accountable for crimes committed against humanity.
Albanese issued the warning on Friday, saying violent attacks had been reported across the occupied West Bank, particularly in the northern region and around Nablus.
“Alarm! Violent attacks reported in all West Bank particularly northern area and Nablus!” she wrote in a post on social media platform X, warning that Israeli settlers, supported by occupation forces, were carrying out coordinated attacks against Palestinians.
She said “packs of settlers, terrorists in full force backed by Israeli soldiers” were openly calling for “blood, literally,” and urged states to deploy an international protective presence to safeguard Palestinian civilians.
Albanese also shared a screenshot circulating on Israeli social media platforms bearing the message: “We want revenge. Not new settlements, not promises for more housing units. We want to see blood.”
Her warning came hours after Palestinian human rights organizations appealed for urgent international intervention to halt attacks by Israeli settlers and occupation forces throughout the occupied West Bank.
The appeal followed an assault by Israeli settlers, supported by Israeli troops, on the town of Tell near Nablus that left four Palestinians dead, according to Palestinian authorities.
Earlier on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and minister of military affairs Israel Katz ordered a “wide-scale military operation” targeting Palestinian towns and villages across the occupied West Bank.
Israeli settlers later attacked the Palestinian villages of Sarra and Urif in the Nablus governorate, setting fire to homes and other property.
Violence across the occupied West Bank has intensified sharply since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, which has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians and wounded at least 173,000 others, most of them women and children.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), at least 1,182 Palestinians, including 243 children, have been killed in the occupied West Bank between October 2023 and July 13, 2026, with more than 70 of those deaths recorded since the beginning of this year.
The same period has also witnessed a sharp increase in illegal settlement expansion, including efforts to re-establish the Kadim and Ganim settlements in the Jenin Governorate.
