Tunisia, Iran agree to expand ties as FM Araghchi visits Tunis

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) speaks with his Tunisian counterpart Mohamed Ali Nafti during a meeting in Tunis, Tunisia, on September 10, 2025.

Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti says his country and Iran agreed to boost cooperation and prepare for a joint committee meeting, while welcoming Tehran’s new deal with the IAEA.

In three posts on X on Thursday, the Tunisian foreign minister said that the agreement to expand Tunisia-Iran bilateral relations was reached during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tunis.

“Pleased to welcome my counterpart @araghchi, Foreign Minister of Iran, on a working visit to Tunisia. We held extensive talks to evaluate and enhance our bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of our two brotherly peoples,” Nafti said.

He also wrote that they had also reviewed joint cooperation in various fields and had emphasized the shared desire to expand this cooperation.

“We reviewed our joint work in various fields expressing our shared keenness to develop it. We agreed to activate our cooperation frameworks & to well prepare for the upcoming session of the Tunisia-Iran Joint Committee. I welcomed the Iran agreement with @iaeaorg, hoping it will reduce tensions,” Nafti further noted.

Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Tuesday that they had struck a new deal to potentially resume cooperation, which Tehran had halted after Israeli and American attacks on its nuclear sites in June.

The deal was concluded after a three-hour meeting in Cairo between Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, following three earlier rounds of talks in Vienna and Tehran aimed at finding a workable path ahead.

Touching on Israel’s war in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Tunisian foreign minister said that both he and Araghchi stressed the need for an immediate halt to the regime’s aggression against Palestinians in the war-torn enclave.

“We stressed the importance of continuous consultation in various Islamic and @UN frameworks to support security& stability in the region. We reiterated the urgent need to stop the aggression in #Gaza, ensure aid reaches #Palestinians, and support their just cause,” Nafti emphasized.

On Tuesday, Araghchi traveled to Egypt, leading a diplomatic delegation. In Cairo, he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty.

The Iranian foreign minister also arrived in Tunisia early Wednesday, where he was welcomed by the country’s officials and met with President Kais Saied and the foreign minister to discuss key bilateral issues.
