Francesca Albanese’s ‘When the World Slips’ book launch

While the world sleeps

Sant'Andrea di Conza is a remote village in Italy's southern Campania region. On Tuesday, its main square was packed with thousands of people from all walks of life who joined a book launch for the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory.

Francesc Albanese's latest book is titled "When the World Sleeps".

Albanese is one of the most outspoken voices in the United Nations against Israeli war crimes, and one of the few officials willing to name the aggressor without fear of repercussions.

She has faced relentless political pressure, targeted media campaigns, and now unprecedented US sanctions, all for defending the principles of international law.

What does it mean to be sanctioned by a superpower? It means to be sanctioned and it's horrible, because it changes my life. It affects deeply my private life, that of my family, and it's unacceptable.

This is against the UN Charter. This is against the UN Convention on privileges and immunities, and, the sanctions must be removed.

So I expect the United Nations to act with the United States, diplomatically, politically, without the way they want to make sure that this is redressed because it's unacceptable.

Francesca Albanese, Special UN Rapporteur on Palestine

In her latest book, Albanese shares 10 deeply personal encounters that helped shape her understanding of Palestine's colonial context and the legitimate grievances of its besieged people; from Hind Rajab, a six-year-old killed for the crime of being Palestinian, to doctors, scholars, artists, friends and refugees.

These stories bear witness to loss, resistance, and, the ongoing struggle for justice in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Some of the experts who attended the UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese's book launch had their say on the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

They expressed deep disapproval of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plans to fully occupy the Gaza Strip.

This is the beginning of the end of the Zionist state. This is pretty self-evident.

Of course, we cannot foresee exactly the development, but I am sure about this.

Moni Ovadia, Jewish Anti-Zionist Actor

If Europe and the US do not stop Israel, Gaza will be fully occupied, a large number of Israeli settlers are ready to enter the street.

It is a shame (shameful). We must do all we can to stop Israel NOW.

People everywhere in the world are against the genocide of Palestinians, against their ethnic cleansing.

Luisa Morgantini, Former EU Parliament Vice President

People at the book launch said that it is essential for governments to address the Israeli regime's grave abuses by starting to impose sanctions and arms embargoes and suspending trade agreements.
