Iran ranked sixth among the world's largest cement-producing countries in 2023, according to the latest figures released by World Population Review.
The report shows that Iran produced 65 million metric tons of cement in 2023, with a clinker production capacity of 81 million metric tons.
Clinker is an intermediate product in cement manufacturing. When mixed with other materials, it acts as the primary binding agent in the production of cement.
As one of the strategic pillars of Iran's economy, the cement industry plays a vital role in infrastructure development, construction projects, and non-oil exports.
Backed by abundant mineral resources, a skilled workforce, and a strategic geographic location, Iran has secured its position among the world's top cement producers.
Despite facing challenges such as sanctions, inflation, and energy shortages, Iran's cement industry has maintained its profitability thanks to its competitive advantages and strong domestic demand.
Experts say that removing price controls and changing construction patterns have created new opportunities for the sector.
However, they say, addressing structural challenges, including high transportation costs and energy imbalances, will require supportive policies and substantial investment.
Sustaining the industry's growth is considered a strategic necessity for the future of Iran's economy.
Baes on the report, China remained the world's largest cement producer in 2023, with an output of 2.1 billion metric tons, despite a slight decline from 2.4 billion metric tons in 2021.
India ranked second, producing 410 million metric tons in 2023, up from 380 million metric tons the previous year. Vietnam followed in third place with 110 million metric tons.
The United States ranked fourth with 91 million metric tons, followed by Turkey with 79 million metric tons.
Iran secured sixth place with 65 million metric tons, ahead of Brazil (63 million), Indonesia (62 million), Russia (57 million), and Saudi Arabia (53 million).
