The government media office in the Gaza Strip says another Palestinian journalist has been killed in an Israeli strike in the blockaded territory, taking the death toll to 229 since early October 2023, when the occupying Tel Aviv regime launched its all-out onslaught there.
The office said in a statement on Thursday that Ahmad Abu Aisha, who worked as a correspondent for Palestine Today TV, lost his life after being directly hit by an Israeli drone in front of his home in the Sawarha area, west of the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
The media office condemned “Israel’s systematic assassination of Palestinian reporters in Gaza,” and called on human rights and media institutions to “condemn these systematic crimes against Gaza journalists.”
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the killing as a deliberate and criminal act aimed at silencing the truth. The syndicate said the Palestinian journalist was directly targeted while standing in front of his home west of Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
He was killed instantly in a “clear and deliberate crime against an unarmed journalist fulfilling his professional and national duty.”
The syndicate condemned Israel for pursuing a calculated policy of targeting journalists and media institutions in direct violation of international humanitarian law, which guarantees protection for media professionals in conflict zones.
It called for urgent international action and asked the International Criminal Court to hold Israeli leaders accountable for crimes against journalists.
“Palestinian journalists have become targets simply for doing their job — conveying the truth to the world,” the statement read.
At least 57,762 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and another 137,656 individuals injured in the brutal Israeli onslaught on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the besieged coastal territory.
