Israeli strikes destroy hospital in southern Lebanon: Health Ministry
An Israeli airstrike has completely destroyed a hospital in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, dealing another blow to a healthcare system already under severe strain from months of attacks.
Ghandour Hospital in the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa was destroyed by Israeli airstrikes on Sunday morning, the ministry said in a statement, describing the incident as a further violation of the protection granted to medical facilities under international humanitarian law.
The hospital had ceased operations about two months ago as Israeli attacks intensified in Nabatieh and nearby areas, the ministry said.
It went on to say that the hospital had nevertheless played an important role during previous periods of escalation, providing medical services to residents and serving for a prolonged period as a shelter for people displaced by the fighting.
The latest destruction brings to 17 the number of hospitals across Lebanon damaged by Israeli strikes since March 2, according to the ministry. Three hospitals in southern Lebanon have also been forced out of service.
The attack on Ghandour Hospital followed a series of Israeli strikes across the Nabatieh district that killed four people and wounded 20 others, according to a preliminary Health Ministry toll. Several locations were hit, including Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the Al-Rahibat neighborhood in Nabatieh city, Arab Salim and Kfar Remman.
The escalation has intensified in recent days after the Israeli military said it intercepted a drone allegedly launched by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah toward its forces operating in an area that Israel refers to as a “security zone” in southern Lebanon.
The latest strikes have taken place despite a US-backed framework agreement signed on June 26 that calls for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory alongside the deployment of the Lebanese army.
Since March 2, Israel has continued its offensive against Lebanon, which has claimed the lives of more than 4,000 individuals and left more than 12,000 others injured. Lebanese authorities also report that over 1 million people have been displaced.
Israel maintains its occupation of certain areas in southern Lebanon, with some regions being held for decades and others since the 2023-24 war, while its recent military aggression has further extended its reach into Lebanese territory.
