Israel attacks Gaza flotilla
Israeli forces have boarded a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid vessel off the coast of the besieged territory, after surrounding the Madleen ship and demanding the activists aboard it surrender. This, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The coalition said it lost contact with the ship after it was boarded by the regime’s forces. An online video showed the situation just before the ship was boarded, with activists seen preparing for interception. They wore life jackets as Israeli quadcopters hovered overhead. Earlier, Thiago Avila, an activist on board the Madleen ship, had said in a social media post that they were surrounded by Israeli army boats. Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament, who is aboard the vessel, broadcast images of the sirens sounding on the ship. Israeli media said the regime’s forces had taken control of the ship, and abducted the activists without any resistance from them. The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine said five Israeli speedboats had attacked the Madleen. Francesca Albanese condemned the regime’s move, saying Israel has no authority to stop the Madleen ship in international waters.
Iran-IAEA relations
Iran has warned that it will take retaliatory measures if the International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA, adopts a resolution against the country in the upcoming session of its Board of Governors. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran's spokesman said the IAEA should not expect Tehran to continue its broad cooperation if such a resolution is adopted. Behrouz Kamalvandi said Iran has prepared a list of measures in response to such a resolution, part of which will be technical, and another part will concern the nature of its cooperation with the agency. He stressed that European countries seek to use an anti-Iran resolution as a tool to trigger the snapback mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal in the coming months. Kamalvandi stressed that Iran's adversaries intend to use the resolution to pressure Tehran into giving up its nuclear assets. His remarks came after the IAEA’s latest report accused Iran of further increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium. Tehran called the report fully biased and politically motivated.
US immigration crackdown
Clashes have erupted in the US city of Los Angeles after President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to face off demonstrators protesting the immigration crackdown. Police used tear gas, batons, and pepper spray to disperse the crowd. The demonstrators waved flags and signs calling on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement forces to get out of their communities. The Los Angeles Police Department has called on protesters to clear the area or face arrest and risk injury. An unknown number of protesters have already been detained following clashes. Sunday marked the third day of clashes between police and protesters condemning the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants. Trump said the National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles to ensure law and order. The National Guard, a reserve military force, is frequently used in the event of natural disasters, and occasionally in instances of civil unrest. This is the first time since 1965 that a US president has deployed the National Guard without a request from a state governor.
