Iran FM, IAEA chief discuss latest state of cooperation

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has discussed the latest state of cooperation between Iran and the UN nuclear agency with the Iranian foreign minister.

In a phone call with Abbas Araghchi on Sunday, Rafael Grossi, the director general of the IAEA, once again welcomed indirect talks between Iran and the United States.

He declared the agency’s readiness to provide any assistance in the process of the talks.

The top Iranian diplomat, for his part, highlighted the role played by the IAEA regarding Iran's nuclear issues within the framework of the agency’s duties and legal powers.

Araghchi said, as a responsible member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran will continue its cooperation with the IAEA in line with its legal and international obligations.

He expressed hope that all outstanding issues related to the Safeguards will be resolved as soon as possible through the agency’s technical and professional approach.

Araghchi also informed Grossi of the latest developments related to indirect talks between Iran and the United States.

Tehran and Washington have already held three rounds of indirect talks mediated by the government of Oman.

Technical negotiations between Iran and the United States, involving experts from both nations, commenced in the Omani capital, Muscat, with the primary objective of establishing a framework for discussing a potential agreement on Tehran’s civilian nuclear program.

Michael Anton, the State Department’s head of policy planning, is leading Washington’s expert-level delegation, while Iranian deputy foreign ministers Kazem Gharibabadi and Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi will lead Tehran’s.

According to reports, the technical negotiations will precede the high-level talks, establishing a foundation for the subsequent discussions.

The previous round of indirect talks between Iran and the US was held at the Embassy of Oman in Rome on April 19.

Iran has emphasized that the success of the negotiations relies on the demonstration of goodwill, seriousness, and realism from the other party.

According to the spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the Iranian delegation will adjust every step of the talks based on past experiences and the behavior of the US.
