Around 70,000 people demonstrated for the right to housing in the centre of Madrid, according to the Spanish government's regional office in the capital, though organisers put the figure at 500,000.

Recent measures proposed by Spain's socialist government, which included automatic renewal of tenancy contracts and restrictions on evicting vulnerable tenants -- measures aimed at stemming over a week of unrest triggered by the September 23 forced expulsion of a pensioner from her Madrid flat -- were shot down by opposition parties on Friday in Spain's parliament.
