'Blessed victory day for Iraqi people': Basra residents celebrate withdrawal of US-led forces

Residents in the southern Iraqi city of Basra took part in a car convoy on Wednesday (September 30) evening to celebrate the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq.

Footage showed dozens of vehicles driving around the city, with people leaning out of car windows waving Iraqi flags and the yellow flag of the Nujaba movement.

The celebrations marked the departure of US forces after more than two decades of occupation of the country.

The withdrawal of the final troops, mainly from an airbase in Erbil in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, marks an end to the biggest US war of the century, which brought widespread devastation and chaos from which Iraq has yet to fully emerge.
