An Iraqi legislator says genuine sovereignty depends on the government's authority to make decisions independently, after US-led military forces withdrew from their bases in Iraq, ending 23 years of occupation.

On Thursday, Mohammed al-Dulaimi underlined the need for Iraq's independence in the spheres of security, politics, and economy. He stated that the Arab nation must enjoy its own independent decision-making power, free from any foreign intervention or pressure.

He also stressed the importance of unity in taking political decisions in accordance with national interests.

“There must be an independent decision-making process in Iraq. We reject any foreign interference. Any decision, whether security or economic, must originate from within Iraq and must be taken without any regional or international pressure,” Dulaimi pointed out.

The lawmaker emphasized that Iraqi political decisions must be unified, seek to serve national interests and safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

“Independence in decision-making is essential for governing a country that is capable of managing its internal affairs as well as foreign relations on the basis of national interests,” he stated.

The US military presence in Iraq dates back to the 2003 invasion, with Washington withdrawing its forces in 2011 before returning them in 2014 under the pretexts of combating Daesh terrorism.

The final withdrawal was carried out under an agreement between Baghdad and Washington, with Iraqi authorities now assuming primary responsibility for the country’s security.
