Five militants killed as IRGC Ground Force dismantles terrorist team in southeastern Iran
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has announced the elimination of a terrorist team in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, saying that at least five members of the group were killed in a joint counter-terrorism operation.
The Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force said in a statement on Saturday that the professional terrorist team, planning targeted killings in Saravan County, was identified and dealt a decisive blow at dawn in a joint operation involving servicemen from the IRGC, the General Intelligence Directorate, and the Police Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FARAJA).
The statement added that four terrorists were neutralized, and a number of weapons, along with quantities of ammunition and explosives, were discovered at the team's hideout.
“The United States and the notorious Zionist regime, which have both suffered a major defeat on the military front, have instructed terrorist groups to make up for their failures through fostering insecurity in Sistan and Baluchestan Province,” the IRGC Quds Base further noted.
The announcement continued that three Iranian intelligence servicemen were also martyred during the counter-terrorism operation, which wound down at around 3 p.m. local time (1130 GMT).
The Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force also praised the support and patience of local residents.
It stressed that the security of Sistan and Baluchestan Province constitutes a red line, and that its forces are closely monitoring the region for any possible movement by terrorist groups and will respond firmly at the appropriate time.
The latest anti-terrorism operation comes days after terrorists killed two local members of the Basij volunteer force during an attack targeting their vehicle in southeastern Iran.
Deputy Governor for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs of Sistan and Baluchestan Province said on Sunday that the “cowardly attack” took place as the vehicle carrying logistics came under attack in Zahedan County.
The victims, identified as Kayvan Ramroudi and Abolfazl Oudi, "bravely held their position" before achieving martyrdom, he stated, adding that additional information about the incident and the identities of the assailants would be disclosed by the relevant authorities in due time.
Sistan and Baluchestan Province, which shares a border with Pakistan's Balochistan Province, has experienced numerous terrorist attacks aimed at both civilians and security personnel in recent years.
Terrorist groups conducting assaults on Iranian interests in the southeastern and southwestern regions of the country are thought to be affiliated with foreign intelligence agencies.
