Iran has put forward a draft proposal for the creation of a union of radio and television networks within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
The proposal was submitted by Iran’s representative during an SCO media forum held in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, earlier this week, according to a Wednesday report from the World Service department of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
The report said that IRIB representative in the meeting Hossein Sheikhyian had called for more structured cooperation among media organizations of SCO member states in areas such as content exchange, joint production, reciprocal broadcasting, professional training, and shared media initiatives.
Sheikhyian also proposed that IRIB World Services’ Shahab platform, a network of outlets broadcasting programs and content in 27 languages, be used as a model for increased collaboration between radio and television networks of SCO countries.
He further suggested that SCO countries could cooperate through new media platforms such as VOD and AOD, and create a shared media glossary while launching joint production projects for documentary and cultural programs.
The IRIB official said that Iran’s proposal for establishing an SCO radio and television union is aimed at expanding cultural interaction and strengthening independent narratives within the bloc, which is primarily known for its economic and political functions.
Iran joined the SCO in 2023 as part of its new policy to expand ties with countries in the Eastern world and the Global South, and to bolster its resilience against economic and political threats from Western states.
Iran has sought to take a more active role in the SCO, which includes major powers like China and Russia, in recent years by engaging more in its integrated transportation and economic networks.
