Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has arrived in Baku to participate in the 20th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) and discuss recent regional developments.
Upon arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport on wednesday, Qalibaf was welcomed by Mojtaba Demirchilou, the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, officials of Iran's embassy, and Azeri officials, including Musa Qasimli, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Speaking before his departure, Qalibaf said the conference would bring together parliamentary speakers and delegations from across the Islamic world in the Azerbaijani capital.
He described the gathering as an important opportunity to brief participating delegations on major developments over the past year, particularly the Ramadan War and its regional consequences.
“The events of the past year, especially the Ramadan War and its impact on the region, provide important issues that should be explained and discussed with parliamentary leaders and delegations,” he stated.
The Iranian Parliament speaker said that regional dynamics have changed significantly since the US-Israeli aggression against Iran and require a different approach.
According to Qalibaf, some countries previously believed that forces and states operating from thousands of kilometers away could provide security for the region.
“After the Ramadan War, it became clear that foreign forces that have come from thousands of kilometers away are unable to establish security and have themselves become a source of instability,” he remarked.
Qalibaf added that the new regional realities should be taken into account in future discussions on security and cooperation.
He also noted that the visit would include talks on bilateral relations and areas of cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan.
The visit to Baku follows Qalibaf's trip to Oman on Tuesday, where he was accompanied by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for talks on regional developments and maritime security.
During the visit, Iran and Oman agreed to establish a joint committee to continue consultations on the future administration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
