Pakistan expresses 'profound respect, appreciation' to Iran's Leader, pres. as war-ending MoU signed

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistan, which led mediation efforts resulting in recent signing of a war-ending memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US, has expressed respect and appreciation towards Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian.

"I express my profound respect and appreciation to His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Islamic Republic of Iran, and President Masoud Pezeshkian for their wisdom, foresight, and statesmanship in embracing the cause of peace," Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote in a post on X on Thursday.

Earlier, the Islamic Republic's and the United States' presidents electronically signed the MoU, with the text having been finalized and the understanding officially in effect.

"Islamabad MoU shall enter into force with immediate effect and as a first step," Sharif said.

The Pakistani premier also recognized the efforts of the Iranian negotiating team, including lead negotiator and Speaker of Iran's Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The Iranian negotiators' "patience, perseverance, and commitment to constructive engagement were instrumental in bringing this agreement to fruition," he stated.

The Pakistani official also expressed gratitude towards Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia for their respective contributions to the process.

"May this Memorandum of Understanding serve as an enduring foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect, and shared prosperity for the complete region," Sharif concluded.

The signing stage followed efforts at ending the cycle arising out of the United States' and the Israeli regime's latest bout of unprovoked aggression against Iran that lasted from February 28 to April 7.

US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire on the latter date after the aggression was faced with at least 100 waves of decisive and retaliatory Iranian strikes against sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region.

Now, a 60-period of negotiations is expected to take place aimed at arrival at an agreement between Tehran and Washington, amid the former's insistence on its legitimate rights to self-defense, peaceful nuclear activity, and non-interference in its internal affairs and warnings against resumption of violations.
