Hezbollah MP: Potential Iran-US deal should push Lebanon to reconsider talks with Israel

Ali Fayyad, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc -- Hezbollah's political wing in the Lebanese parliament

A Lebanese legislator from Hezbollah's political wing in the parliament says the Beirut government should reconsider its negotiations with the Israeli regime and how to deal with security and political challenges in light of speculations about a possible agreement between Tehran and Washington.

Ali Fayyad, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc, said on Saturday that the potential Iran-US deal and its consequences on the situation in Lebanon should provide the basis for the Lebanese government to review its current approach.

He stated that the Beirut government's negotiating position, instead of resolving the crisis, has taken a certain course due to Israeli pressure, and has weakened Lebanon's position in the face of security developments.

Fayyad noted that the Lebanese government must reconsider some of its policies by accepting the limitations of the current path.

He criticized the Lebanese government's stances vis-à-vis Iran and Hezbollah, stating that these policies have not yielded any tangible achievements for Lebanon.

The Hezbollah lawmaker also emphasized that the Lebanese government does not enjoy unanimous domestic support, and currently lacks the necessary capability to handle external pressures and political bargaining.

Fayyad further highlighted that the Lebanese government should use the potential opening in light of the agreement between Iran and the United States to strengthen its position, and prioritize a complete ceasefire, a halt to the Israeli regime's offensives, as well as the rapid and unconditional withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from southern Lebanon.

He emphasized that Hezbollah expects the Lebanese government to assume its responsibilities for the outcome of negotiations with Israel; but at the same time, it wants officials to distance themselves from the policy of passivity towards Israel and subservience to the United States.

Fayyad's statements come as the United States has been pushing the Beirut government to hold direct negotiations with Israel, irrespective of the recurrent Israeli acts of aggression against various parts of Lebanon.

Washington and the Tel Aviv regime are trying to disarm the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement at the hands of the country's government by pushing Beirut towards signing a security agreement with Tel Aviv.

The death toll from Israel’s offensives on Lebanon since March 2 has risen to at least 3,711 individuals killed and 11,483 others wounded.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington and Tehran are close to finalizing a deal. One of Iran's conditions to reach an agreement is an end of fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon.
