A senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ali Akbar Velayati, has warned US President Donald Trump not to try to change the status quo in the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently under full control of the Iranian armed forces, saying any such attempt would only make things more complicated for Trump and the US.
Velayati, a former foreign minister, said in an X post on Sunday that Trump doesn’t understand the full impact of a worsening situation in Hormuz, a key waterway in the Persian Gulf which handles a fifth of global oil demand.
“Mr. Trump! The world of politics is not a realm like the movies of Jack Sparrow… Whoever plays with the world’s lifeline will find himself in a stalemate!” he said.
The post came as Trump continues to threaten Iran with renewed military action if it does not lift the restrictions it imposed on passage through the Strait of Hormuz in early March, in response to US-Israeli aggression against the country.
The restrictions have caused a major surge in international energy and commodity prices, while experts warn that prices could go through the roof if Washington does not reach a deal with Iran to permanently end the aggression, which came to a halt as part of a ceasefire on April 8.
Velayati dismissed Trump’s threats to impose harsh economic conditions on Iran if it does not agree to US demands, saying his “foolish and antic behavior” cannot overshadow the prevailing geopolitical realities.
“Trump has recently threatened Iran with famine, despite the fact that global food security and the supply chain of chemical fertilizers are controlled by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. This shows Trump’s lack of awareness of the world’s economic and political situation,” said the long-serving diplomat.
