A senior Russian diplomat says the United States needs to revise its policy on nuclear issues in order to open the door to an agreement with Iran.
Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said in a post on his X account on Monday that the US “did not expect the Iranians to be such tough negotiators.”
“The US needs to reconsider certain elements of its position, in particular on nuclear issues in order to bring them in line with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” he wrote.
The Russian diplomat said that a review in Washington’s nuclear positions “would open the door to a peace agreement” with Tehran.
The United States and Israel launched their unprovoked, illegal war of aggression against Iran on February 28. They assassinated Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and struck nuclear facilities, schools, hospitals and civilian infrastructure.
During his meeting with the Russian president, Iran's FM Abbas Araghchi thanked Russia for its stances in support of Iran.

On April 8, forty days into the war, a Pakistan-brokered temporary ceasefire took effect. Iran and the US held one round of intensive discussions in Islamabad on April 11 aimed at securing a permanent deal but the process ended after 21 hours with no breakthrough, with Iran citing Washington’s excessive demands and insistence on unreasonable positions.
Since then, Iran has refused to rejoin the talks as long as the US keeps an illegal blockade on Iranian vessels and ports, and says it will not open the Strait of Hormuz while the blockade is in place.
The US blockade has failed to achieve its stated goal of cutting off Iran’s oil revenues.
