‎Russia warns Trump’s threats against Strait of Hormuz will roil global markets

Russia has warned of “negative” consequences for global markets following US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

‎“Such actions will likely continue to negatively impact international markets,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

‎Trump said on Sunday that the US Navy would enforce a “naval blockade" on the strategic waterway, through which about one fifth of global oil supplies typically passes.

Traffic at the strait has dropped to a trickle since Iran imposed restrictions on passage of tankers in response to the US-Israeli strikes days after the aggression began on February 28.

Trump claimed the blockade is scheduled to take effect Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (14:00 GMT).

His threat followed the latest round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States in Pakistan, which ended without agreement.

Iranian negotiators said despite roughly 21 hours of continuous talks, American negotiators made “excessive” demands, preventing any breakthrough during Saturday’s discussions in Islamabad.

‎The Iranian delegation presented several initiatives, but US positions obstructed progress.

‎Issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear rights were among the key points of dispute.

In response to Trump’s latest threats, Iran's military warned early on Monday that no port in the Persian Gulf or the Sea of Oman would be safe if Iranian ports are targeted.

‎Peskov also noted that Russia, holder of the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile, remains ready to take in Iran’s enriched uranium as part of any future agreement with Washington.

‎“This proposal was made by President Putin in conversations with both the United States and regional states. The offer still stands, but has not been acted upon,” Peskov said.
