Iran tells Russia it will defend its interests after Ukrainian attack
Iran has told Russia that it is determined to defend its security and national interests in the face of a recent attack by Ukraine on an Iranian commercial vessel sailing in the Caspian Sea toward Russia.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a Sunday phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Ukraine’s attack on the Iranian ship a day earlier was “a dangerous act of adventurism and a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.”
The phone call was made to exchange views on the “illegal attack” and its “dangerous consequences,” according to a readout of the conversation released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
“...The Islamic Republic of Iran will resolutely defend its security and national interests,” Araghchi said during the call.
Lavrov, for his part, strongly condemned the aggression against the Iranian vessel and characterized it as an act contrary to international law and a threat to the trade routes of Iran and Russia.
The Russian foreign minister said the Ukrainian regime must be held accountable for the war crimes it has committed in its confrontation with Russia, as well as for “endangering commercial shipping in the Caspian Sea.”
The Ukrainian president announced in a post on X on Saturday that Kiev had hit vessels he claimed were used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship, in the Caspian Sea.
Iran has issued a strongly worded condemnation, saying it would respond to the attack, which left one sailor dead and another injured while causing damage to the Iranian commercial vessel.
In their Sunday phone call, Araghchi and Lavrov also discussed the latest developments in the West Asia region, especially the United States' breach of its commitments under an agreement it signed with Iran last month to permanently end the aggression against the country.
The two top diplomats reiterated that the new wave of insecurity created in the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf is a result of the US violating the terms of its agreement with Iran.
