New Israeli strike on south Lebanon kills infant girl during father's funeral

A new Israeli strike has killed the infant sister of a seven-year-old girl who barely survived an Israeli aerial attack on her family home in southern Lebanon last week.

Aline Saeed, wrapped in bloodied bandages, had come to bury her father. Instead, a fresh strike on Sunday killed her infant sister and several other relatives.

On April 12, Aline’s 64-year-old grandfather, Nasser Saeed—who also survived the initial attack—joined other family members in the southern port city of Tyre to collect the bodies, which were wrapped in green cloth.

One of the bundles, noticeably smaller than the rest, contained his granddaughter Taleen, Aline’s sister. She had not yet turned two.

With bandages on his head and right hand, and scratches across his face, Nasser described the moment: “They said it was a ceasefire. Like all these people, we went up to the village. We went to the casket to read the prayers and walk home… suddenly we felt like a storm was landing right on us.”

The first strike on the Saeed family home in the village of Srifa occurred on April 8—one of the deadliest days in Lebanon’s recent history.

Israeli strikes that day killed more than 350 people across Lebanon and left the Saeed family with four additional relatives to bury.

Aline’s father was mourned in silence as the women around him turned their faces to the sky and screamed in agony.

The Lebanese news agency NNA reported that the latest wave of Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon has killed at least 11 people since early Sunday.

Six were killed in a strike on the town of Marub in the Tyre district, while another strike on Qana killed five others. The Israeli army continued airstrikes on several towns in the Nabatieh and Tyre districts.

The latest escalation began on March 2, days after the United States and Israel launched tehir joint aggression against Iran.

Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah responded by firing on Israeli positions in retaliation for repeated violations of the November 2024 ceasefire. Israel has since intensified its air and ground assault on the country.

The Israeli military offensive in Lebanon has killed more than 2,000 people, including 165 children and nearly 250 women since April 2.
