Head of Iraq’s State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki has reiterated respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and the will of its people during a meeting with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack.

Maliki, who previously served as Iraq’s prime minister, received Barrack on Friday in Baghdad, his media office said.

The two sides discussed recent developments in Iraq’s political landscape and upcoming national priorities.

Maliki highlighted the importance of supporting the democratic process and strengthening political stability, underscoring the need to respect Iraq’s sovereignty and the choices of its people.

During the meeting, both sides stressed the continuation of communication and coordination on issues of mutual concern.

The meeting took place amid US intervention in Iraq's internal affairs as Washington has voiced opposition to the nomination of al-Maliki for the post of Iraq’s prime minister.

Earlier, Trump had warned in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, against al-Maliki’s return to the premiership, threatening to halt US assistance to Iraq if he were chosen.

Trump cited his experience during al-Maliki’s previous tenure as the reason for his position.

The State of Law Coalition maintains that al-Maliki’s candidacy for a third term as prime minister enjoys “consensus” and “national acceptance.”

Al Jazeera, quoting a source within Iraq’s Coordination Framework of Shia parties, reported that Barrack informed al-Maliki that Washington would impose sanctions if he proceeded with his candidacy.

According to the source, US sanctions on Iraq could be announced as early as mid-next week.

The report added that the initial phase of sanctions would target figures close to the resistance and would later extend to include some leaders within the Coordination Framework.
