Araghchi says ‘fair and balanced’ deal within reach ahead of Geneva talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaks to the India Today news magazine on February 25, 2025.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that a “fair, balanced and equitable deal” with the United States is attainable ahead of the third round of nuclear talks in Geneva.

In an interview with India Today on Wednesday, Araghchi confirmed that Tehran and Washington will meet for another round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Thursday.

He said the two sides made some progress in the previous round and reached certain understandings, adding, “We can build something in the form of an agreement” based on them.

“I think a fair, balanced and equitable deal is achievable,” the top diplomat said, adding that “there is no military option for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program."

The foreign minister added that negotiations are the “best possible way to resolve this problem. “Tomorrow in Geneva, there is every possibility to come to an agreed solution which is fair and balanced.”

He said, “If there is any concern, if there is any question, if there is any ambiguity, we are ready to address, we are ready to answer questions, we are ready to remove concerns. But we are not ready to give up our right to peaceful use of nuclear technology.”

The new round of talks in Geneva comes amid high regional tensions, with the United States maintaining a heavy military presence in West Asia and US President Donald Trump repeatedly threatening military action if no agreement is reached.

When asked if the Islamic Republic is prepared for different scenarios amid US threats against the country, Araghchi said Iran is fully prepared for both “war and peace.”

He emphasized that the country’s armed forces are ready, adding, “The aim is to prevent a war. When you are prepared for a war, you can prevent it.”

Iranian officials have consistently stated that the country's nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and that any negotiations must respect Tehran’s enrichment rights under international law.

Iran has repeatedly warned that even “limited” strikes would trigger a decisive response, placing US regional bases and Israel under immediate fire.
