The United States has announced a fresh set of sanctions connected to Iran, even as diplomatic efforts over Tehran’s nuclear program continue.
According to a Wednesday statement by the US Department of the Treasury, the new sanctions target dozens of people, companies and maritime vessels it accused of supporting Iran’s sensitive industries.
Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) claimed in the statement that those listed were involved in activities linked to Iran’s oil trade as well as the development of missile capabilities and other advanced military technology.
The restrictions were introduced just a day before Iranian and US delegations were to hold a new round of talks in the Swiss city of Geneva to sort out differences about Tehran’s nuclear program.
The talks follow two rounds of discussions this month in Oman and in Geneva, where the two sides put forward initial proposals for how they can reach an agreement.
This comes amid threats of a military confrontation between Iran and the US, as Washington has increased its military buildup in the region, prompting Iran to warn that it would retaliate harshly against any act of aggression.
The new sanctions were announced on the same day that Donald Trump addressed Congress, where he repeated his previous accusations against Iran and raised the possibility of military action if negotiations fail.
OFAC claimed it had identified networks believed to help Iranian institutions obtain equipment and raw materials needed for weapons production.
It claimed these networks allegedly assisted organizations tied to Iran’s defense sector in securing specialized machinery and components.
