Trump seen as ‘erratic with age’ by majority of Americans: Polls

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that six in ten Americans consider US President Donald Trump to have become "erratic with age."

Overall, 61% of respondents, including a notable share of Republicans, described Trump as “having become erratic with age,” the poll concluded on Monday.

Breaking down the figures, 89% of Democrats, 30% of Republicans, and 64% of independents expressed this view.

Meanwhile, a separate CNN/SSRS poll shows Trump’s approval rating has dropped 11 points from last year, falling from 47% to 36%.

Similarly, the latest Post/ABC/Ipsos survey indicates a decline in the number of Americans who believe Trump has acted within his authority.

The polls come as the 79-year-old US president delivers his annual State of the Union address to Congress, following a month of sharp public criticisms directed at lawmakers and judges.

Trump, who returned to office in January 2025 at age 78, holds the record as the oldest US president to be inaugurated.

Since returning to office, Trump has rolled out new policies and proposals at a rapid pace, imposing sweeping tariffs on imports from dozens of countries and deploying masked federal agents to towns and cities to enforce unauthorized immigration.

He has frequently adopted an angry tone in his public remarks. Last week, he expressed being “absolutely ashamed” after the conservative-leaning US Supreme Court struck down several of his tariffs as illegal.

In November, he sharply criticized Democratic lawmakers who encouraged members of the US military to refuse unlawful orders, labeling them traitors who, he warned, could face execution.

Trump won the 2024 election in part because his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, was widely perceived to have lost mental acuity during his time in office.

Biden left the presidency at age 82, the oldest in US history. Trump is on track to surpass that record, turning 80 in June.

A February poll found that only 45% of respondents would describe Trump as “mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges,” down from 54% in a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted in September 2023.

The same survey revealed widespread concern about the age of the nation’s leaders, with 79% of Americans agreeing that “elected officials in Washington, D.C., are too old to represent most Americans.”

Shortly after taking office in 2025, Trump’s approval rating hovered around 50%. Since then, his ratings have fallen, with immigration emerging as a key issue on which Americans increasingly express skepticism about the president’s policies and vision.
