Handala warns of expanded cyber campaign against US critical infrastructure
The Handala hacking group has warned it will continue targeting US industrial control systems after claiming responsibility for a cyber operation against the operational technology (OT) infrastructure of the US state of Maryland.
In a statement released on Thursday, the group said critical US infrastructure would remain a key focus of its future operations, describing its cyber activities as part of efforts against US and Israeli interests.
Handala said attacks targeting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems represented only a portion of its capabilities, warning that wider campaigns could target vital sectors, including water, electricity and transportation networks.
The warning follows a recent statement by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which said cyber actors were targeting industrial equipment manufactured by companies including Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric and Siemens.
US federal agencies have also issued a joint advisory warning of coordinated attempts to attack internet-exposed industrial control systems (ICS), with recent incidents reportedly causing operational disruptions and financial losses across critical infrastructure sectors.
Handala’s latest operation highlights the growing cyber vulnerabilities facing US institutions and security infrastructure, despite Washington’s claims of technological dominance.
The group, which is a part of the pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli occupation cyber resistance, has previously exposed information linked to high-level US and Israeli officials, describing its operations as part of psychological and information warfare against the occupation and its supporters.
Handala’s previous releases involving US and Israeli authorities have been portrayed by the group as a message that officials associated with aggression are not beyond the reach of cyber operations carried out in support of oppressed peoples.
The coordinated cyber attacks come amid continued US and Israeli military aggression against Palestine, Lebanon, Iran and the broader Resistance front.
The group says its cyber operations demonstrate the growing capabilities of resistance-aligned hackers and aim to challenge the security image of the aggressors while supporting broader political and military resistance efforts.
