Shamkhani warns of ‘strong, decisive’ response to any adventurism against Iran

Iran will deliver a “strong, decisive, and appropriate” response to any adventurism against it, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani warned, underscoring Tehran’s high military readiness amid increasing US threats.

“We will respond to any adventurism against Iran in a strong, decisive, and appropriate manner,” Shamkhani told Al Jazeera on Friday.

His warning comes after months of escalating rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran. In late January, Trump spoke of “another beautiful armada” of warships heading toward Iran and claimed that failure to reach a deal would bring consequences “far worse” than the June strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Shamkhani emphasized that Tehran is prepared for any scenario. “Our military readiness is high. The cost of any miscalculation by any party will be significant,” he said.

His remarks follow the June aggression by US and Israeli forces on Iran’s nuclear sites — attacks that occurred during indirect talks between Tehran and Washington. Iran responded by launching missiles at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which hosts US forces, signaling that it would not leave aggression unanswered.

Shamkhani also addressed Israel’s role in regional tensions. “The Zionist regime cannot take any action without direct support from Washington,” he said.

The Leader’s aide, meanwhile, added that the “logical” path is to avoid de-establising acts. “Avoiding any action that could affect regional stability and security is the logical and rational path for all sides.”

The call comes as indirect nuclear talks resumed in Muscat last Friday. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the new round as a “good start,” adding that the talks are limited strictly to the nuclear file and must proceed in a calm atmosphere, free from threats.

Shamkhani noted that diplomacy could succeed under fair conditions. “If negotiations are realistic and free of excessive demands, they can move in a positive direction and serve the interests of all parties. Diplomatic efforts in the region are aimed at strengthening the political option and reducing tensions.”

Iranian officials say their main demand in Muscat is the effective and verifiable lifting of economic and financial sanctions. Tehran insists that any deal without tangible economic benefit would be meaningless. It also maintains that uranium enrichment on Iranian soil is a legal right and a non-negotiable principle.

Shamkhani reinforced that position on defense capabilities. “Our missile systems are a red line and not up for negotiation,” he said as reports suggest that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had in a Wednesday meeting with Trump to include Iran’s missile program into terms of a probable deal.

Shamkhani also pointed to the need for increased security coordination in the region. “The region’s security situation has become more complex and requires special coordination mechanisms,” he said.
