Protesters have staged rallies across the United States against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), clashing with police and federal agents.

In a coordinated “National Shutdown” protest movement on Friday, demonstrators staged mass rallies calling for the abolition of ICE.

In Minnesota, waves of demonstrators spilled into the streets for the second week in a row following an announcement from the Justice Department saying it would open a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti – the second Minnesotan to be killed by federal agents in the state this year – following the death of Renee Good. Protesters demand accountability for the deaths of Pretti and Good.

Massive crowds filled downtown streets in Minneapolis and culminated in intense confrontations with police in downtown Los Angeles. Police and federal agents responded with fierce crowd control tactics – including tear gas, flash-bang devices, and baton charges – after demonstrators attempted to breach police lines and confront officers outside the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building. Several protesters were arrested.

Large crowds also culminated in the San Francisco Bay Area, joining in the nationwide protests.

However, the protests were not limited to these cities. Americans protesting the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown touched every corner of the United States as well, holding demonstrations, walkouts, and rallies.

Demonstrations took place in dozens of cities east and west, including New York, Chicago, and San Diego.

Organizers called on the Americans to show their disagreement with the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policy in the form of a “National Shutdown” and by abstaining from work, school, and shopping.

“No work, no school, no shopping” were the protest organizers’ directions, leading to school walkouts, canceled classes, and marches in places as distant from the Midwest as California, North Carolina, and Maine.

Dozens of businesses, from independent bookstores to restaurants, shut their doors in solidarity with the protesters.

The rallies and mass strikes are aimed at halting what the critics called “ICE terror.” They are pressuring the Trump administration to put an end to the anti-immigration raids.

US President Donald Trump has defended the anti-immigration crackdown, labeling the protesters in a post on Truth Social on Friday night as “Radical Left Lunatics, Insurrectionists, Agitators, and Thugs.”
