US issues new sanctions targeting Iran’s defense projects

The US announces sanctions targeting Iran’s defense program, including its missile and UAV projects.

The United States has issued new sanctions targeting eight Iranian individuals and entities over their alleged roles in the country’s defense program, including activities related to the development of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The US Treasury said in a statement on Tuesday that its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had designated five individuals and three Iran-based companies for providing support to Iran’s defense programs. This allegedly included facilitating the supply of materials such as sodium perchlorate used in missile production, as well as manufacturing components required for UAVs.

The sanctioned individuals were identified as Mostafa Rostami Sani, Reza Zarepour Taraghi, Bahram Rezaei, Erfan Qaysari, and Mehdi Ghaffari. The entities were named as Pardisan Rezvan Shargh, Fanavari Electro Moj Mobin, and Kavoshgaran Asman Moj Ghadir.

The US has repeatedly targeted Iran’s defense activities with broad sanctions, accusing Tehran of using domestically produced missiles and UAVs for what Washington describes as “destabilizing” regional activities, including alleged use by Russia in the Ukraine war.

Iran has firmly rejected these accusations, describing the US sanctions as a futile attempt to hinder the advancement of its defense sector.

Tuesday’s Treasury announcement also included two designations related to Venezuela, targeting Empresa Aeronautica Nacional SA (EANSA) and its chief executive, Jose Jesus Urdaneta Gonzalez, for their alleged involvement in UAV trade with Iran.

As claimed in the statement, EANSA has maintained and overseen the assembly of Mohajer-series UAVs produced by Iran’s Qods Aviation Industries (QAI) in Venezuela, and has negotiated the purchase of Mohajer-6 UAVs worth millions of dollars from the QAI.

The Treasury further claimed that Urdaneta Gonzalez coordinated with members and representatives of the Venezuelan and Iranian armed forces regarding UAV production in Venezuela.
